Yes, the CrowdStrike linux module did cause a kernel panic in the past.
But reading the comments about that, this triggered the CrowdStrike devs to take advantage of the eBPF feature of linux and move their module into user space, where it can not cause a panic. Windows doesn’t have an equivalent feature.
Also, the panic happened on reboot, but linux servers don’t reboot to install most updates, so even if it did affect many linux servers, they wouldn’t have all gone down in the space of an hour. Server admins are very careful about reboots, at least on Linux where they have that luxury.
I don’t know what happened back then but it didn’t make any headlines, even though there are a lot of Ubuntu and RedHat servers in use at CrowdStrike customers.
